Q: Do I need to take the Psychology Subject Test?

A. Maybe not.  Some schools require it.  Others do not.  Check with the admission requirements for your particular program.

Q. What is a good score?

A. Most departments view scores above 500 on verbal and above 500 on quantitative as minimally acceptable, although many will not commit to that as a hard and fast rule.  For competitive programs, much higher scores are necessary.  Check the web pages of your programs to see if they list the typical scores for their students.  The typical score can give you a ballpark of where you need to be.

Q. Will the test be changing?

A.  The GRE web page indicates “Yes.”  In 2006, the test may be changed.  If you are using study guide books, you would be wise to take the test before the change because you will have a better sense of what the test will involve.  If you are planning to take the test in 2007 or later, then you can wait for new prep books to come out.

Q.  None of the graduate programs to which I am applying requires the GRE.  Should I take it anyway?

A.  There is no reason to take it unless it is required.
