Psychology Department Interview Weekend 2020

Welcome and congratulations on being invited to the Oklahoma State University Psychology Department's Interview Weekend!

This year our interview weekend will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2020. You must let us know that you plan on attending interview weekend by January 3rd, 2020. This web page was designed to provide you with a general overview of the open house weekend and to answer some of the questions you may have in preparing for your visit to Oklahoma State.

There is a lot of information on this page. Please make sure that you go over everything and e-mail Emily Birkel (psychadm@okstate.edu) if you have questions.

The page is divided as follows:

    1. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

You should try to make all of your travel arrangements as soon as possible to secure the best rates. Stillwater is 65 miles from both Oklahoma City and Tulsa. However, for those who will be flying, we strongly encourage you to make your arrangements through the Stillwater Regional Airport (STW), as it is much easier to get to our campus from this airport.  The only direct flight to Stillwater comes from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), so you will need to book a flight to Dallas in order to make the connecting flight to Stillwater. We have arranged to have students pick you up at the Stillwater Regional Airport on Friday and to return you to the airport on Sunday. Keep in mind, renting a car yourself can be much more expensive. Please use this as an opportunity to learn more about our program and to meet our students and other applicants. There are only two flights on American Airlines to the Stillwater airport from DFW on Friday. One arrives at 1:40 pm, another at 10:16 pm. There are only two flights out of the Stillwater airport on American Airlines to DFW on Sunday.  Please keep in mind that with only two flights into and out of Stillwater Regional Airport, tickets will sell out very fast. The sooner you purchase your tickets, the better.

Here are the specifics:

If You Are Flying:

Schedule your flight into the Stillwater Regional Airport (STW). Email Emily Birkel(psychadm@okstate.edu) by Friday, January 17th with your flight information (e.g., flight number, arrival time). We will be providing transportation on Friday, January 31st. and Sunday February 2rd. to and from Stillwater Regional Airport.

If it is not possible to schedule a flight to Stillwater, there is an airport located in Oklahoma City.  Oklahoma City is located approximately one hour away from Stillwater.  We will be sending one shuttle to pick applicants up at the Oklahoma City Airport (OKC).  If you plan to fly into this airport, please arrive at the airport no later than 6 pm on Friday and leave no earlier than 12 noon on Sunday.

There is another airport located in Tulsa. This is approximately one hour away from Stillwater; however, there is no OSU shuttle available for transportation from the Tulsa Airport. If you wish to fly into the Tulsa airport, you will need to rent a car and drive to Stillwater.

What to do if your plane is delayed:

As soon as you realize your plane is going to be late or there is going to be a problem, please call Emily Birkel at (402) 630-7631, or call Patricia Alexander at either (405) 780-3012. Be sure to bring these numbers with you so that you can contact us if you need to.

If You Are Driving:

General Directions to Stillwater by Car

Stillwater is located in the north central part of Oklahoma. If you are coming from the south/southwest (Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana), you will probably want to come through Oklahoma City. If you are coming from north/northwest (Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska), you will probably want to come through Wichita. If you are coming from the east (Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee), you'll probably want to come through Tulsa. The directions to OSU (and the Psychology Department) are listed below:

From Tulsa

Take US highway 64 west. This is a limited access four lane road that will eventually turn into the Cimarron Turnpike. When it becomes the Turnpike (a toll road) there will be an exit for "old 64." Stay on the Turnpike. It will cost you $1.25 but will save you about 30 minutes. The Stillwater exit is the first exit past the McDonald's oasis. This exit is a short (5 min) spur that ends with a final unmanned toll booth (you will need 50 cents in exact change). Go straight through the toll booth (do not exit on Perkins Road) and the road will merge with highway 177 going south. Do not leave this road when 177 splits. Follow it all the way to downtown Stillwater and look for 6th street. This will be at a major intersection (with a stop light) and is well marked. Go west on 6th (right) and follow it to Monroe (again a well-marked stop light intersection). Go north on Monroe until you come to a stop light. Campus is straight ahead. Enter campus and park in the first lot you see on the left. The building is North Murray where the Psychology Department is located. If you arrive before 5 pm, you'll get a ticket, but after 5 you can park in any "legal" space (not the reserved spaces for the clinic, handicapped parking, etc.)

From Oklahoma City

Take interstate highway 35 north to exit 174 (Stillwater, Oklahoma State University). This is highway 51. Follow 51 east (to the right) until you get to Stillwater (about 15 minutes). It will be obvious when you're in Stillwater when you start seeing stop lights. Continue on 51 (it will not be marked as 6th street) until you reach Monroe Street. Go north on Monroe until you come to a stop light (University). Go past university and enter the first parking lot you see on the left. The building is North Murray where the Psychology Department is located. If you arrive before 5 pm, you'll get a ticket, but after 5 you can park in any "legal" space (not the reserved spaces for the clinic, handicapped parking, etc.)

From Wichita

Take interstate highway 35 south to exit 174 (Stillwater, Oklahoma State University). This is highway 51. Follow 51 east (to the left) until you get to Stillwater (about 15 minutes). It will be obvious when you're in Stillwater when you start seeing stop lights. Continue on 51 (it will not be 6th street) until you reach Monroe Street.

If any problem arises, call the departmental office (405)-744-6027 and ask for Emily Birkel or Patricia Alexander

  1. HOUSING FOR THE WEEKEND

You have several options:

  1. The current graduate students at OSU will be opening up their homes to visiting applicants. They remember what it was like to interview and are very willing to have you stay with them. The accommodations are not plush, but the price is right (free)! However, space is limited and on a first come, first served basis. Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in staying with a student. The student will bring you to the meetings and see that you have a great weekend. Housing is provided for Friday and Saturday nights. You will not be finished with the activities on Saturday until around 9 or 10 pm. Please let us know by January 3rd, 2020, if you want to stay with a graduate student.
  2. B. If there are no longer housing arrangements available or you choose not to stay with a graduate student, here is a link of hotels that you may stay at during your time in Stillwater. It is your personal responsibility, as well as financial responsibility to make these arrangements if you choose to stay at a hotel. Transportation from these hotels to the OSU psychology building and back to the hotel will be provided on Saturday and Sunday.

  1. INTERVIEWS WITH FACULTY

You will get to meet with the entire clinical or experimental faculty; however, you will meet most of the faculty members in small groups. Each of you will have two individual interviews with faculty members and these are arranged after considering your interests and faculty recommendations.

The interview weekend is designed to give you an opportunity to learn more about the faculty members you might be interested in working with, as well as the Department of Psychology, OSU, the graduate program in general, or life in Stillwater.

  1. OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE WEEKEND

What to expect on Saturday:

You will each have your own schedule that will include meetings with faculty members, other applicants, and meetings with graduate students. You will likely have two individual meetings with faculty. You will also go to lunch with a faculty member and other students and have additional opportunities to chat with faculty at the dinner on Saturday night. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday will be our treat. However, you will need to pay for your other meals while you are here. The dinner on Saturday evening normally lasts until 9 or 10 pm.

By the time you leave Stillwater, you will have had the opportunity to meet and talk with all of the Clinical or Experimental faculty, depending on your interests. One question you will be asked over and over again is "Do you have any questions?" So you may want to give some advance thought to exactly what it is you want to know about our program.

Expected dress for the interview weekend is professional during your interviews and more relaxed during dinner. On Saturday, we recommend a coat and tie for men; suit, slacks, skirt, or dress for women. You may also want to consider something more casual for Saturday evening.

If you need any further information or clarifications, feel free to give Emily Birkel a call at (402) 630-7631. She would like to be able to help make this weekend as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. Congratulations once again on receiving this invitation!
